Coffee Boxes

Custom coffee boxes are printed cartons built around the bag, pod tray or capsule sleeve that actually holds the coffee, not around the coffee itself. We produce them in cardboard and corrugated for pod, bean, ground and subscription formats, with panel space for roast date and origin information. Orders start at 200 units.

Coffee is a category where the carton and the primary pack have two different jobs, and confusing them leads to stale product. The carton protects, presents and stacks. Keeping coffee fresh is the bag or pod’s job, and getting that division right at the quote stage is what separates coffee packaging that performs from packaging that just looks good on day one.

What the Carton Does and Doesn’t Do

Coffee loses freshness through oxygen, moisture, light and aroma escape. A printed paperboard carton alone stops almost none of that. The barrier work is done by whatever’s inside it, typically a foil-lined bag with a one-way degassing valve for whole bean and ground coffee, or an individually sealed pod or capsule.

If you’re currently shipping coffee in a printed carton with no inner barrier bag, that’s the thing to fix before a packaging redesign. No amount of carton specification substitutes for a proper barrier bag with a degassing valve on whole bean or ground coffee.

One Carton, Many Formats

“Coffee boxes” covers several genuinely different structural problems, and we specify each differently.

• Whole bean and ground bags: the carton is typically a sleeve or outer box around a stand-up barrier bag with a degassing valve. Structure needs to accommodate the valve’s bulge and the bag’s settled shape.

• Pod and capsule cartons: built around a fitted insert holding individual pods upright in rows, sized precisely to the pod diameter so they don’t rattle or crush in transit.

• Subscription and gift boxes: often carry multiple bags or a mixed format, with interior printing and unboxing presentation as a bigger part of the brief than pure protection.

• Drip bag and single-serve cartons: smaller format, higher unit count per box, with panel space that shrinks fast once roast information and brewing instructions are added.

Tell us which of these you’re packaging, since the dieline, insert and barrier requirements are different enough that a generic “coffee box” brief usually needs a follow-up question anyway.

Roast Date and Origin Labelling

Coffee packaging carries more voluntary information than most food categories, and it’s worth planning panel space for it deliberately rather than squeezing it in at proofing.

• Roast date is not a federal labelling requirement, but its absence is increasingly noticed by coffee buyers, and specialty roasters treat it as close to mandatory for credibility.

• Origin and processing information, single-origin naming, elevation, processing method, tasting notes, has become standard expectation in the specialty segment and is a genuine differentiator on shelf.

• Standard food labelling still applies underneath the marketing copy: net quantity, ingredient statement where relevant, and manufacturer or roaster details.

Tell us your roast date format, origin story length and any certification marks (organic, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance) at quote stage, and we’ll size the panels around them instead of shrinking your brand story to fit whatever space is left. Confirm specific labelling requirements with your own advisor.

Pricing and Minimum Order Quantity

The minimum order for custom coffee boxes is 200 units per printed design. Pod inserts, corrugated subscription boxes and gift formats may need a higher run.

If you run several single-origin roasts through the same box format, ask about a common carton structure with origin-specific print runs sharing the same dieline, which reduces tooling cost even where each origin still needs its own artwork.

How Your Order Is Produced

• Send your requirements. Format (bean, ground, pod, subscription), your barrier bag or pod supplier if already chosen, dimensions, roast date and origin panel needs, quantity and stock.

• Receive your quote and dieline. Structure sized around your actual bag or pod, with panels laid out for your labelling and story copy.

• Place artwork and approve the proof. We check bleed, colour mode, resolution, fold lines, and that roast date and origin panels are legible at printed size.

• Request a physical sample (optional). Order within 30 days and the cost is credited back. Fit your actual bag or pod insert into it before committing.

• Production. Printing, coating where specified, die-cutting, insert assembly and gluing.

• Quality check and dispatch.

Standard production runs 8 to 12 days after proof approval, plus transit.
