Custom Gable Boxes
Custom gable boxes are one-piece cartons with a peaked top and a built-in die-cut handle, assembled by hand from a flat blank with no glue. They’re the standard for food takeaway, party favours, gift packaging and event catering. We print them in kraft, cardboard and coated stock with window and food-safe options. Orders start at 200 units.
The handle is the whole appeal and also the whole engineering problem. It carries the entire loaded weight of the box through two small bridges of board, so caliper and load have to be matched properly. Tell us what’s going inside and how heavy it is and we’ll spec it so the handle doesn’t tear on the way to the car.
The Handle Decides the Board
A gable box handle is formed by two die-cut openings at the peak. When a customer lifts it, the full weight of the contents passes through the narrow board bridges either side of those cuts.
What determines whether it holds:
- Board caliper. Too light and the handle tears or deforms, usually at the worst moment. Gable boxes generally want a heavier stock than a comparable tuck end carton, and heavier contents push it further.
- Grain direction. Board is stronger across one axis than the other, and handle failure often traces back to grain running the wrong way relative to the load. We set grain direction in the dieline, so it’s not something you should have to think about, but it’s why an apparently identical box from a cheaper supplier tears and ours doesn’t.
- Load. A box of pastries and a box of jarred preserves are very different jobs. Tell us the loaded weight, not the box size.
- Handle reinforcement. For heavier contents we can specify a doubled or reinforced handle panel.
If you’re currently getting handle failures on gable boxes bought elsewhere, that’s the specification to look at, and it’s usually fixable.
Gable Boxes Are Not Sealed
Worth stating plainly, because it catches people out. The peak folds and locks, but it isn’t a seal. There are gaps at the fold, and the box can be opened and reclosed without any visible sign.
The implications:
- No tamper evidence unless you add it. A branded sticker or label across the peak is the standard fix, cheap and effective, and doubles as a branding surface.
- Not dust-tight or moisture-tight. Fine for a short journey from counter to table or car. Not appropriate for long storage of anything sensitive.
- Not a shipper. The peak crushes, the handle catches in sorting machinery, and the contents shift. If a gable box needs to travel by carrier, it goes inside a mailer or corrugated box.
For food delivery specifically, tamper-evident labelling has become a normal expectation among customers and a requirement for some delivery platforms, so budget for a label alongside the box.
Food Use: Grease and Compliance
Most gable boxes we produce hold food, and two specifications matter.
Grease resistance. Oil and fat migrate into uncoated board and appear as dark translucent patches, sometimes within the hour. Fried food, pastries, buttered items and anything warm need a grease-resistant board or coating. Plain kraft looks right for artisan food brands but performs poorly with greasy contents unless it’s specified for it.
Food-contact compliance. Board and coatings that contact food are regulated as food-contact substances. The FDA does not approve individual packages, so the correct request is a Certificate of Compliance for the specific board and coating supplied on your order. Ask us and we’ll provide it.
Also worth flagging: warm food creates steam, which softens paperboard and makes contents soggy. Ventilation holes are cheap to die-cut and make a real difference for hot items. Tell us if your product goes in hot.
We’re a printer rather than a compliance authority, so confirm requirements for your product with your own advisor.
What Brands Use Them For
- Food takeaway and delivery: meal boxes, pastries, fried chicken, noodles, salads
- Bakery and patisserie: cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts, slices
- Party and event favours: weddings, birthdays, corporate events
- Gift packaging: hampers, small gift sets, seasonal gifting
- Retail carry packs: a purchase that needs to leave the store in something branded
- Subscription and sample kits: where the handle adds perceived value
- Promotional and trade show giveaways: carried around an event, which is free brand visibility
Options and Finishing
- Kraft brown: the category default, natural and recyclable, and the right look for most food brands
- White cardstock: for full-colour artwork
- Grease-resistant board: for food applications
- Coloured and textured stock: for gifting and events
- Die-cut windows: with or without film, so contents show. Very effective on bakery and gift use.
- Ventilation holes: for hot food
- Interior printing: visible when the peak opens
- Coatings: matte and gloss lamination, with food-safe options where contact applies
- Foil stamping, embossing and spot UV: for gifting and premium event work
- Labels and stickers: tamper-evident seals, variant coding and allergen information
- Ribbon and tie options: cut into the dieline for favours and gifting

Pricing and Minimum Order Quantity
The minimum order for custom gable boxes is 200 units. Specialty stocks, windows and food-safe coatings may need a higher run.
| Quantity tier | Typical situation | Cost per unit |
|---|---|---|
| 200 to 500 | Event, wedding, single-venue trial | Highest per unit |
| 500 to 1,000 | Café or restaurant, seasonal range | Noticeably lower |
| 1,000 to 5,000 | Multi-site foodservice, retail range | Significantly lower |
| 5,000+ | Chain supply, ongoing programme | Lowest per unit |
Because gable boxes assemble without glue, there’s no gluing step in production, which keeps the unit cost lower than an equivalent glued carton. Two ways to keep it lower still: stick to one or two box sizes across your menu or range rather than a size per item, and use a common printed box with variant labels instead of separate print runs.

How Your Order Is Produced
- Send your requirements. Contents, loaded weight, whether food is involved and whether it goes in hot, quantity, stock and any window requirement.
- Receive your quote and dieline. Board caliper and grain direction set against your load so the handle holds, with food specification applied where needed.
- Place artwork and approve the proof. We check bleed, colour mode, resolution, fold lines and how artwork sits around the handle cut-outs and the peak.
- Request a physical sample (optional). Order within 30 days and the cost is credited back. Load it to your real weight and carry it, since that’s the only real test of a handle.
- Production. Printing, coating, die-cutting and creasing. No gluing, so boxes ship as flat blanks.
- Quality check and dispatch. Inspected, flat-packed and shipped.
Standard production runs 8 to 12 days after proof approval, plus transit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum order for custom gable boxes?
The minimum is 200 units. Specialty stocks, windows and food-safe coatings may require a higher quantity to run economically.
How long does production take?
Standard production is 8 to 12 days after proof approval, plus transit time.
How much weight can a gable box handle hold?
It depends on board caliper and grain direction, not on box size. The full load passes through two narrow board bridges either side of the handle cut-outs, so heavier contents need a heavier stock and, above a certain weight, a reinforced handle panel. Tell us the loaded weight rather than the dimensions and we’ll specify for it.
Why do gable box handles tear?
Usually because the board was too light for the load, or because grain direction runs the wrong way relative to the lifting force. Both are specification issues rather than manufacturing faults, and both are fixable. If you’re getting failures on boxes bought elsewhere, that’s where to look.
Are gable boxes tamper-evident?
Not on their own. The peak folds and locks but doesn’t seal, and it can be opened and reclosed without a visible sign. A branded sticker or label across the peak is the standard solution, and it doubles as a branding surface. For food delivery it’s worth treating as essential.
Can gable boxes be used for hot or greasy food?
Yes, with the right specification. Greasy contents need grease-resistant board, otherwise oil migrates into the paperboard and shows as dark patches through your print. Hot food generates steam, which softens board and makes contents soggy, so ventilation holes are worth die-cutting in. Tell us whether the product goes in hot.
Can gable boxes be shipped through a carrier?
Not on their own. The peak crushes, the handle catches in sorting equipment and contents shift. Use a gable box inside a mailer or corrugated outer if it needs to travel by carrier.
Do gable boxes need assembly?
They fold up by hand from a flat blank in a few seconds, with no glue or tape. That keeps them cheap to produce and cheap to store, and it’s why they suit event teams and busy food counters.
Are gable boxes recyclable?
Uncoated kraft and plain cardstock gable boxes are recyclable. Plastic window film, lamination and some grease-resistant coatings reduce that, and food residue affects it too. If recyclability is part of your brand claim, tell us and we’ll recommend the cleanest specification that still performs with your contents.
