Lip Balm Boxes

Custom lip balm boxes are printed cartons for lip balm sticks, tubes, pots and tins, specified around a very small panel that has to carry a lot: brand, flavour, ingredients, net quantity and contact details. We produce them in cardboard and kraft with tuck-end, sleeve, pillow and window formats. Orders start at 200 units.

Lip balm is a small-format category where the carton is judged by two things: how it looks at arm’s length on a counter, and whether the required copy actually fits and stays legible. Both are decided at the quote stage, not at proofing.

Cosmetic or Drug? Your Claims Decide the Label

This is the question that changes the artwork most, and it is worth settling before you design.

In the US, a lip balm that only moisturises, smooths and improves the look of lips is a cosmetic. A lip balm that carries an SPF or sun-protection claim, or claims to treat or prevent a condition such as chapped lips or cold sores, is treated as an over-the-counter drug, or as both a drug and a cosmetic. FDA looks at the whole presentation of the product, so a claim on the carton, the website or social media can change its category.

• Cosmetic lip balm: statement of identity, net quantity, ingredient list, and the responsible person’s name and address.

• SPF or medicated lip balm: all of the above plus a Drug Facts panel, which takes considerably more panel space and affects carton size.

Tell us which category your product falls into at quote stage, because a Drug Facts panel can decide whether a 1-panel sleeve is enough or you need a larger carton. We are a printer rather than a regulatory authority, so confirm classification and label content with your own regulatory advisor.

Adverse Event Contact Details Now Belong on the Label

Under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA), each cosmetic product label must include a domestic address, domestic phone number or electronic contact information (which can be a website) through which the responsible person can receive adverse event reports. That applies to cartons as well as tubes, and it is one more line of copy competing for space on a small panel.

Send us the exact wording you plan to use and we will size the carton and set the type around it, rather than shrinking your branding to fit whatever is left.

Structure: Small Products Need a Snug Fit

• Sticks and tubes suit tuck-end and sleeve cartons. Dimensions should match the product closely so it does not rattle or slide out.

• Tins and pots need a slightly deeper carton and, for multi-packs, a fitted insert so they do not knock together.

• Multi-packs and sets work well in auto-lock bottom cartons, which hold their shape under the weight of several units.

• Counter and retail display is often better served by a display box that holds a dozen or more units.

• Shipping is covered by our mailer boxes when lip balm goes out in an online order.

Pricing and Minimum Order Quantity

The minimum order for custom lip balm boxes is 200 units. Windows, inserts and premium finishes may need a higher run.

To control cost across a flavour range, keep one carton size and dieline and change the artwork or use a printed flavour label, rather than tooling a new structure per variant.

How Your Order Is Produced

• Send your requirements. Product format (stick, tube, tin), exact dimensions, whether it is a cosmetic or SPF or medicated product, your label copy, quantity and stock.

• Receive your quote and dieline. Structure sized to your product, with panels laid out around your required copy.

• Place artwork and approve the proof. We check bleed, colour mode, resolution, fold lines and that ingredient, contact and any Drug Facts text is legible at printed size.

• Request a physical sample (optional). Order within 30 days and the cost is credited back. Put your real product in it before committing.

• Production. Printing, coating, die-cutting, window patching and gluing.

• Quality check and dispatch. Flat-packed and shipped to you.

Standard production runs 8 to 12 days after proof approval, plus transit.

Lip Balm Box FAQs

What size should a lip balm box be? It should match your product closely, with just enough clearance to slide the balm in and out. Send us the product’s diameter and height, or a sample, and we will size the dieline to it.

Does a lip balm box need an ingredient list? A cosmetic lip balm sold at retail needs an ingredient declaration, net quantity and responsible person details on the label, and MoCRA adds adverse event contact information. Confirm the exact requirements with your own advisor.

Does SPF lip balm need different packaging? It needs a Drug Facts panel, which takes more space, so tell us at quote stage and we will size the carton for it.

Can I use one box for several flavours? Yes. Keep one structure and vary the print or add a label per flavour.
