Serum Boxes

Custom serum boxes are printed cartons for dropper bottles, airless pumps and small treatment bottles, typically in the 15ml to 50ml range. We size them to the assembled bottle including the dropper or actuator, with fitted inserts, and with panel space planned for an ingredient declaration that often won’t fit on the bottle. Orders start at 200 units.

Serum packaging has a job most cosmetic cartons don’t: protecting the formula. Many of the actives that sell serums are degraded by light, which is why the primary bottles are amber, cobalt or opaque. The carton is the second layer of that protection, and a window cut into it undoes part of the work.

Light Is the Enemy of Your Actives

Several of the most commercially important serum ingredients are light-sensitive. L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) oxidises with light exposure, which is why vitamin C serums are sold in amber or opaque bottles and why a browning serum is a well-known consumer complaint. Retinoids and some botanical extracts are similarly sensitive.

That has a direct packaging consequence, and it’s one most suppliers will happily ignore to sell you a window:

• A die-cut window in a serum carton reduces the protection the carton provides. On a retail shelf under continuous lighting, that exposure accumulates over weeks.
• If your formula is light-stable, a window is a legitimate design choice and can show off a beautiful bottle.
• If it isn’t, we’d rather you used strong product photography on a closed carton, or a very small feature window on a side panel rather than the front face.

Measuring a Dropper or Airless Bottle

The most common sizing mistake in this category is measuring the bottle rather than the pack.

• Dropper bottles: the dropper cap adds height, and the glass pipette inside means the cap can’t be compressed. Measure with the dropper seated as it ships.
• Airless pumps: measure with the overcap on. If the pump can depress in transit, allow clearance so it isn’t pressed against the carton top.
• Widest point, not the label diameter. Bottle shoulders and collars often measure wider than the body.
• Filled weight, which determines whether a plain tuck end base is adequate.

Send us the assembled bottle if you can. Two minutes with a caliper removes the single most common cause of a serum carton that won’t close.

Small Bottles, Long Ingredient Lists

A 15ml serum bottle has very little usable label area, and active-led formulas tend to have long INCI lists. This is the practical reason serum brands buy cartons.

Where the primary container is too small to carry the ingredient declaration legibly, it can sit on the outer carton instead. Declarations generally need a minimum type height of 1/16 inch, with 1/32 inch permitted on packages under 12 square inches, so the space required is defined rather than negotiable.

Two things that help:

• Interior printing. Move supporting copy inside the carton and keep the outer panels for design.
• Tell us the list length at quote stage. Panels get sized around it rather than the problem surfacing at proofing.

Inserts: Glass, Droppers and Presentation

• A fitted insert holds the bottle upright and still, which protects the glass and keeps the bottle facing forward when the customer opens the box.
• Dropper bottles benefit most, because the pipette is the fragile part and it sits in the neck where impact concentrates.
• Presentation matters here more than most categories. Serums are a high-consideration purchase, often bought as gifts, and the opening moment is part of what the price buys.
• For sets and routines, a multi-cavity insert holds several bottles in a designed layout.

Materials and Finishing

• Standard white cardstock: clean, clinical, the most common choice in this category
• Rigid press board: for prestige and clinical-premium positioning
• Textured Neenah stock: understated, tactile, popular with dermatological brands
• Kraft brown: for natural and clean-beauty ranges
• Coatings: matte and soft-touch dominate the category. Gloss reads as less clinical.
• Foil stamping and embossing: a restrained foil wordmark is the category convention
• Spot UV: effective on a matte carton for subtle differentiation
• Fitted inserts: upright retention for glass
• Interior printing: application instructions inside the carton, where they’re read

How Your Order Is Produced

1. Send your requirements. Assembled bottle dimensions with dropper or pump fitted, filled weight, quantity, stock, finish, ingredient list length, and whether the formula is light-sensitive.
2. Receive your quote and dieline. Carton and insert designed together, panels sized for your regulatory copy.
3. Place artwork and approve the proof. We check bleed, colour mode, resolution, fold lines and whether your ingredient type is legible at printed size.
4. Request a physical sample (optional). Order within 30 days and the cost is credited back. Put the real bottle in it and check the dropper clears the top.
5. Production. Printing, lamination, die-cutting, finishing, insert assembly and gluing.
6. Quality check and dispatch.

Standard production runs 8 to 12 days after proof approval, plus transit.
